| State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics of China |
State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics was founded as the Medical Genetics
Laboratory at former Hunan Medical College in 1972. In 1991, the laboratory was
selected as the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics based on its
scientific merit. Prof. Jiahui Xia, the founder of the laboratory, is a
distinguished human and medical geneticist and a member of Chinese Academy of
Engineering.
Research in the laboratory focuses on mapping,
identification, and functional characterization of genes linked to hereditary
diseases. Its research area has recently been extended to fields of gene
therapy and human stem cells. The laboratory is also a higher education
institution in China. More than 100 graduate students have been trained and
awarded either M.Sc. or Ph.D. in the laboratory. Research projects in the
laboratory are supported by provincial and national governments as well as the
international collaboration programs.
